If you have a large collection of high-res pictures, it may be quite difficult to decide which one to place on your desktop. Only the latest Windows versions can cycle through multiple wallpapers automatically. If you wish to enjoy this feature on older Windows editions, you would need a specialized application. WallSwitch can change your desktop wallpaper according to your own preferences. You can use this application even if you are a Windows 7 or Vista user, because it comes with a few more features than your preferred operating system, such as the possibility of organizing wallpapers in different themes or adding pictures from RSS feeds.

WallSwitch is free and open source. Its setup kit is only 354 KB, so it should take only a few seconds to download and install the application. It uses .NET Framework 4, so you need to make sure that it is installed on your computer, before running the application.

You may create one or more wallpaper themes, make a series of configurations and view a wallpaper history on separate tabs, on the application's compact interface. Created themes can be selected in a drop menu, after which you must click a button to activate it. Individual pictures or entire folders can be added by right clicking in the file list and selecting the appropriate options, but an easier way is to drag and drop the files on the list. RSS feeds can be added as well, in the same list.

The Settings tab is where you can set the wallpaper changing frequency, choose a display mode, select a background color and transparency level and select an effect, like Sepia, Greyscale or others. On Windows Vista or a later edition, you can also enable a cross-fade transition effect, if Aero is enabled.

The application can change your wallpapers automatically, every few seconds, minutes, hours or days. You can change them manually if you want, by clicking Next and Previous buttons, located in the upper right area of the interface or by right clicking the system tray icon and selecting the appropriate options. It is also possible to change wallpapers and themes, by using a series of hotkeys, which you can define yourself.

Pros

WallSwitch can change your desktop wallpapers automatically, on a regular basis. You can organize your wallpapers in different themes. The application allows you to change pictures manually, by selecting a few options or using hotkeys.

Cons

There are no serious issues to mention. With its simple, but efficient functionality, WallSwitch can bring diversity to a dull Windows desktop.
